Mardy Fish commits to defend title in
Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships
American Mardy “The Fort Lauderdale” Fish, an Olympic silver medalist and a hard court specialist, currently ranked 15th in the world, will be returning to the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport,
Rhode Island with the hopes of a successful title defense.
The tournament which follows the prestigious Wimbledon Championships will be hitting the courts from 4th to 10th of July, 2011
The tournament will be honoring the historic grass courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. It is the only grass-court pro tournament in North America and the only men's ATP World Tour event in the Northeast.
32 male players, extracted directly from Wimbledon will be putting in their appearance at The Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships 250 event to fight for the Van Alen Cup and $442,500 in prize money.
Fish will be putting his 9th appearance in Newport following last summer’s performance where he won his fourth ATP World Tour title after ambushing Belgian Olivier Rochus and jumping up ten places in the rankings.
Continuing his ascent, he triumphed at the Atlanta Tennis Championship by winning second straight title of the year and first time on hard court by defeating countrymen and top seed Andy Roddick.
CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Mark L. Stenning is very much excited about his reappearance at the Newport as he said, “Mardy has clearly worked very hard over the past year, and it's been great to see his success
continue following his Newport victory. He's always been a strong competitor in Newport and we look forward to welcoming him back to defend his title this summer”.
The up surging 6 ft 2 inch, seems to have the same level of excitement. Commenting on his return to the event he said, “Newport was a great week for me last year. It was good to see all the work I'd put into training pay off with
a title, The Hall of Fame is a special place to compete and I look forward to returning to the tournament this summer”
Fish’s commitment towards health and fitness, as he dropped 30 pounds early in 2010, paid him in full as he recorded an impressive career best 40–14 win loss record and a career-high ranking of No.16. He was also the runner-up
at the Cincinnati and Queen’s club to the titles at Newport and Atlanta. Later in the season, Fish stood up as a man of the hour by winning two backbreaking five-set singles matches against Colombia in the Davis Cup World Group and was accredited as the “hero
of the American Davis Cup team”
Fish has had a noteworthy start to 2011 season as well, posting two back-to-back semi-final results at Memphis and Delray Beach.
