Fish/Isner defeat Aspelin/ Lindstedt to win tie at Power Horse World Team Cup
America finally bagged victory over Sweden in the round robin stage of the Power Horse World Team Cup when the combination of Mardy Fish and John Isner won the doubles matchup against the pair of Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt.
Being played at the Rochusclub in Düsseldorf, Germany, the American duo up rooted their opponents in three sets, 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-4, taking one hour and thirty four minutes of play.
The tie between America and Sweden was levelled at 1-1, as Isner and Robin Soderling won their singles rubbers for their respective sides before. It all came down to the doubled encounter for deciding the winner of the opening
tie of the Round Robin. Fish and Isner stood up to the task and won the stiff contest from the Swede competitors to take America to a 2-1 victory.
The back-and-forth affair displayed an enthralling contest with a nail biting finish in the third set. The Swede pair had a terrific start to the game and bagged the opener in a convincing manner. Fish and Isner bounced backed
strongly to break the shackles and take the second set to enforce a decider. Aspelin and Lindstedt couldn’t hold in the third set and submitted the match to their opponents to lead Sweden to her first defeat of the tournament.
The big serve of the Americans proved to be their critical success factor for them in the contest, as Fish and Isner delivered 76 per cent of their first serve on target, firing 14 aces without a single double fault. They reeled
off 53 out of 72 total serve points in the match and converted just one break opportunity en route to victory.
A lot of action was observed at the beginning of the opener, with the two teams exchanging serve breaks early. Fish and Isner hung in the game until a second serve break in the ninth game proved devastating for them, as Aspelin
and Lindstedt served out of the first set at 6-4 later.
Both teams failed to register any serve break in the next set and kept the score board ticking on even terms. Nine aces were belted by the Americans to take the scores to 6-6, imposing a tie breaker round. The Swede duo failed
to keep its momentum in the tie breaker and could bag merely five points before submitting the second set to Fish and Isner at 6-7(5).
Fish and Isner carried on their winning momentum in the final set as well and gave no chance to their opponents to come on top. The Americans secured all of the serve points in the decider to seal victory at 10-4 and get America
to a 2-1 victory in her opening tie in the round robin.
