Question:

Fish Oil for Dogs???

I've had quite a few people lately mention giving your dog fish oil to help their skin and coat. My boss told me his vet suggested it to help his shih tzu's skin issues. Since my little guy has some skin issues of his own, I was thinking about trying it. I was wondering if anyone has tried this and if it worked for them. And if so, how long did it take before you could notice a difference.

Thanks for your help in advance.

  1. It's supposed to be really great, however it was recommend for my dog several times. She scratches, chews herself. BUT - it made her sick, even at small doses.

Recently a vet recommended Hill's Pres. j/d - she likes a few as treats, but gags on more than just a few. So if ya try it use caution. Something that did help her was a treat called " In Treats" .  Good Luck !

  2. Yes, it's very good for them. It does pretty much the same things for them as it does for us - helps keep the skin and coat healthy, as well as the joints, heart, etc.

We use it with our guys, and it keeps their skin and coats looking awesome. It only takes about 2 weeks before you start seeing a difference - of course, that's with our dogs, and every dog is different.

    Good luck!

  3. i dont usually use fish oil id rather use skin healthy dog shampoo

    oh and hi

  4. yes it's very good for them. Just like fish is good for us. Most foods have some fish oil in it. Consult your vet to see what he thinks.

  5. My dogs get omega 3 fish oil three times a week and also flax seed oil which they have taken to just fine. Omega 6'fish oil is best if you can find it I can't so far. It takes about three weeks and you start to see a nicer coat and less irritation if the dog has any. They also shed less or so it seems to me! With 4 dogs I would get dust bunnies under and behind things..It has helped me not have to clean so darn much too! they have a pump but I just have the capsules and I open one for each dog and mix in with the food.

  6. I HAVE tried it and it works great! I started noticing a difference with in the first month. My dogs skin improved and the health benefits of taking fish oil for both humans and dogs are amazing.

Pets with inhalant allergies can especially benefit from supplementation with Omega-3 fatty acids [[ Which are found in fish oil]]. Among the positive effects are:

    Inhibition of inflammation

    Possible reduction of steroid dosage

    A synergistic effect with antihistamines

This means that pets with allergies on a regular Omega-3 fatty acid supplement are likely to be more comfortable and may be able to be on less medication.

Premium Plus Omega-3 Gel Caps contain Omega-3 fatty acids including EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are incorporated into the skin's cell membrane.

For Omega-6 fatty acids, such as linoleic acid (LA), use a product like Premium Plus Skin & Coat Tabs. Both Omega-3 fatty acids and Omega-6 fatty acids also help to regulate oxygen use in the cells, which in turn, helps keep the skin healthy and can help damaged skin and hair coat get back to its normal state
