I have a fancy-long tailed guppy in my tank that constantly stays close to the gravel bottom. He constantly bobs up about an inch then goes back down for some reason. He wont eat, but poke around the gravel looking for food. I've seen him go up to the top of tank once, but he darted back down for some reason. Does anyone know any reason for this?

  1. He could possibly have a disease called Ick. It is something that fish get often. But, if he is eating at the bottom of the tank, maybe that is what he likes. However, it does sound like ick

  2. I'd start by having your water tested. If the water is fine you then know that it's something wrong with the fish itself.

    Try adding some aquarium salt.

Ich (aka ick)  isn't the culprit. Ich is also known as the "white spot" disease...and your fish doesn't have white spots. Fish with ich usually rub up against decor also.

  3. My one guppy is doing this as well, but I know that my fish is over 3 years.  Age is a terrible thing.  Most small fish only live 1-3 years at the most.

What is your ph, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate?

Do you add salt to your water?  They are a lover of some salt (recommended dosage on side).

Also try adding a small piece of algae wafer if you have it, they love to pick on them.

  4. it could be stress especialy if its new or maybe just shy ive seen that before try chnaging to a different food i.e. flake to pellets or floating to sinking or add something to your water i reccomend stress coat its a liquid follow the directions and if your fish is stressed it hellps protect them from getting sick also maybe you dont have enough plants or hiding spots so its nervous

    all just suggestions
