My lil sister has been through so many fish diffrent shapes, sizes and breeds but they all die after about a month. I Get them from pets at home. We have a 15 gallon tank, filter, airstone, light. Only keep one fish at a time, feed him once every week, give him a varied diet and treat the water.

She gets really upset because they keep dieing. Any suggestions to why, or what i am doing wrong are welcome. Thank-You

  1. Most fish should be fed twice a day, they should be in a cycled tank, You need to get a master test kit to keep track of ammonia nitrite nitrate and PH, never ever clean the whole tank, just do partial water changes using a gravel vac in the gravel and change the filter once in a while, they say every 3-4 weeks, I have changed mine once in a year, but I buy new carbon.  Research the fish you want next time so you can give it the proper care specified to that breed, some fish are schooling fish so you should have 6 of them for them to thrive.  and never ever keep a goldfish in that size tank.

  2. Are you keeping up on the water quality? Do you check the levels? That could be your problem. You need to use conditioner to take out the chlorine and chloramines, which are harmful to the fish. You also need to check for nitrates, nitrites, pH, ammonia, and temperature. Different fish thrive at different pHs and levels. You also have to do water changes and gravel vacs to take out the p**p and rotting food.

  3. WHAT FEED IT ONCE A DAY

    try google

    type when to feed goldfish

  4. if u dont know the species of the fish then theyre not getting the proper care they need u need to research first about ur fish and feeding it once a week is too short, and some fish need to live in groups

  5. they are more than likely dieing from starvation and being lonely!! also in my experience most fish brought from pets at home generally have a disease or illness anyway!!

  6. 1)feed your fish once everyday

    2)1 fish gets very lonely

3)pets at home fish i have had problems with these if the fishes die with 14 days and you have kept the receipt then you can phone them up and get your money back

4)do you buy coldwater fish or tropical fish if tropical fish you need a heater for them to survive

any more info feel free to email me

  7. Ok, first research - find out what fish 1) fit in the tank and 2) what to feed them.

Then find out how they live - in groups or alone.

Also join some fish keeping forums and read about fishless cycling.

  8. I hope you mean feed once a day and not once a week, because if she is feeding the fish just once a week they are probably dying of starvation.

Are they tropical fish she is buying? If so the tank needs a heater or it will be too cold. If its a goldfish in a coldwater aquarium then maybe 2 small ones would be better than 1 on its own, they do get lonely on their own.

  9. Fish MUST be fed AT LEAST once a day, preferably 2-3 times a day. That is your problem.

  10. They would not be dying of starvation? How often do you do water changes andd did you cycle the tank? If not, that is the reason the fish keep dieing, here is how you cycle a tank-  http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php

Also, most people at the fish store do not know squat. Feed them once a day, they will not starve if fed once a week, but once a day is better. Remember to research each species b4 you get it. Many people do not realize that goldfish need 10 gallons each and that cory cats need to be in schools, or that if you have livebearers you need 2 females for every male so the females do not get stressed by the males chasing them trying to mate. So research a species b4 buying it. A few male guppies would be good to cycle the tank with. Also, when you o water changes make sure you use water conditioner,it makes the water safe for fish. Male guppies are very hardy and pretty. Good luck and e-mail me with any more questions you have at bettalover101@yahoo.com

  11. Do you make sure you treat the water so that it has no toxins in it? e.g. use Aqua Safe water conditioner, or Tap Safe (this is cheaper and is ideal for smaller tanks).

I recommend that you have your tank set up and running for two weeks before adding your first fish. This is so that the filter can be working, and the necessary bacteria can build up.

In a new tank, you will need to add teh initial bacteria yourself (look in the fish aisle in pets at home - it normally comes in a really tiny bottle).

Also, check that your filter is adequate for the size tank you have.

I recommend testing the water frequwently, especially for ammonia (testing kits can be bought from Pets at home). Keep testing for ammonia when you put your fish in, and change about a quarter of teh water every 1-2 weeks (more often until the ammonia levels are at about 0). Don't add any more fish until teh ammonia level is at 0, as tehn you know your filter cna cope with ten fish you already have.

I would also talk to someone in Pets At Home - they will also be able to help and advise you.

    Good luck with your fish!

  12. sorry to hear about your loss, but personally i think its the pet shop, or the age of the fish cus you dont kno how old they are when you get them, try finding another pet shop or ask friends/family who have aquariums where they get theires. i breed guppies which i buy when they are 4-6 weeks old, i get them through e-bay,look in the fish section and find someone close to you who is a reputable breeder and see how you go, good luck and hope ive helped.

  13. Feed the fish every day...do you eat once a week? Fish like companionship, a 15 gallon tank can hold 2 fish..Goldfish need cooler water, tropical fish need warmer water. Switch pet-stores, obviously they don't offer healthy fish, if you see any fish dead in a pet-store...DON'T buy from them, there is a reason why they are dying. Treat the tank before putting new fish in it, your water may be contaminated from past residents. Good luck.

  14. Well I hate to be redundant here but, yea, it's probably the once-a-week food routine. They really are starving, I'd bet.  Aside from that, maybe the temperature is not right?  Different fish have different temperature needs.  Is it a tropical fish or a saltwater fish etc?  The temperature needs to be kept constant if it isn't, sounds like you've got a good tank so you can (and should) put a heater in there if you don't have one yet.  They aren't very expensive, I've found.

    Feed every day...

    good luck!

  15. u feed it only ONCE a WEEK! no wonder they will die by starvation!
