Okay well about 2 hours ago. One of my cousins got in my room and dumped all the fish food into the fish tank and broke the filter. I took all the food that I could out. It was flakes. The tank has 30 baby Convict Chiclids. and The dad. There is no filter now and the water is still dirty. The tank is to big to dump all the water out and put fresh. I was wondering if anyone knows why all the babies are at the top of the water like they are trying to get air or somthing????I dont want them to die...please any info will help.....

 1. The excess food is doing two things. First it is creating an excessive amount of ammonia. This is making the water poisonous to your fish. Second it is depleting the dissolved oxygen in your aquarium. With no surface turbulence that oxygen is not being replaced. You need to get the filter running asap and you need to do small water changes (with cleaning of any debris you can get out of the tank) probably twice a day until the aquarium is clean again.

 2. well what you want to do first is take portions of water out of the tank and put some new ones in right away (remember to put conditioner) and ya they are up there becuase their surroundings is dirty :P just clean the water and theyll be fine

 3. Do you have an airstone that makes tiny air bubbles? if not the oxygen level might be getting low because of less water movement. i guess i would just try to get more water movement and try to fix the filter. good luck.

 4. Get a very large bowl or deep pot. Strain as much water out as you can thru a regular food or tea bag strainer using your siphoning hose, like you're doing a water cange, into the pot. Move the fish and babies to the pot. Go get a filter, maybe one larger than you had or better yet, buy two filters. Put them on the tank to clean up the food. You can use the strainer to help get the food out too. After it's relatively clean, pour the water and fish back in the tank. Maybe someone can go get the filters while you're dealing with the fish. Act quickly.

 5. If you have a little air pump and air stone to up the oxygen that would help, and doing a water change would also help...
