Question:

Fish oil the same as Omega 3 and Omega 6?

I currently give my dog Derm Caps from Drs. Foster and Smith. Derm Caps are basiclly just Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils. I use it as a supplement for shedding. It works really well but it's kinda expensive. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if buying Fish Oil from someplace like Costco would be equivalent and would work the same. It's sooooooooo much cheaper at Costco so I'd like to get it there if it's going to do the same thing. What do you think?

  1. It seems like fish oil has omega 3's but not 6. But getting any fish oil will help.

I use Halo Dreamcoat (which you pour on top of the food and it is high in omega 3s and 6s.) It isn't that expensive and it lasts me a month for a 16 oz bottle.

As a side note...I do know so dog owners who do exactly what you are suggesting and have had no ill effects.

  2. It is very simple. Fish oil has a high omega 3 fat content (EPA and DHA are the omega 3 fats you are look for). A 1.000 mg capsule of fish oil usually has 180 mg of EPA and 120 DHA( total 300 mg of omega 3 fats). Different fish oils have different omega 3 content, look for it in the bottle.

The reason we have to supplement with omega 3 is that our usual 21st century food has 20 to 50 times less omega 3(these are anti inflammatory fats) that what we need. Our food is overloaded with omega 6( pro inflammatory fats), these are the fats we want to avoid, even in the dogs food that is made out of grains( omega 6) instead of meat( omega 3, his natural diet)

So, when you take an omega 3 6 supplement (or give it to a dog) you are worsening your inflammation( accelerated aging) problem.

Don´t worry, give those cheap Cosco omega 3 caps (they love it)to your dog and take them yourself. You can give him 300-600 mg of omega 3 fats and you can take 900 mg ( close to 3.000 mg fish oil) daily.

  3. YUp - you got it.

Omega 3 is found in fish oil capsules at the supermarket or the drugstore - often at two-for-one prices.  Omega 6 is also in their food already, and is not the better oil - stick with the fish oil, which is the good fat they need.  In fact, it is actually a powerful antin-inflammatory!

One note about the big box stores - a lot of things come from imported sources and can contain 'other things'... I would stick with the drugstores and supermarket - on sale, they are cheaper than the big box stores already.
