  1. it could be the algae my grandmother has a HUGE pond. she has a filter with lots of algae and plants which the koi love eating! i would stop using any algae killers if you are, or get a lower power filter, maybe trim anything preventing sun from getting to it. ask your friend anything he uses and observe his setup try to sort off mock it.

  2. If the water is green - you cannot see the Koi - no matter how energeric they are.

The goal of any koi pond is crystal clear water - so that the observer can enjoy the colors, nuances, and hues of the fish - as well as their behavior.

What do you mean "not as rich"?  This is an odd statement.  If you feed your Koi a nice balance of Koi pellets and some goldfish food (e.g. color enhancing vitamins) - then your Koi will be as rich in color as possible.

If you take away the filters - you are asking for trouble - as your friend will eventually find out e.g. she be "trolling" for trouble.

Please respond as to what you mean when you say "not as rich" and "active rather than mine"?

During the hot summer mid-day - Koi are somewhat docile.  What part of the world are you in?  What are the daily air temperatures?  When are you observing your fish - as compared to when you are observing your companions pond?  Some more info please!

Also - each and every Koi has a unique personallity.  Part of the fun is to identify and discover which personality goes with each fish.  Sounds like you have work to do.

  3. if your friends pond is a mud pond then it could be super huge pond.

A pond full of algae is very impossible to have a healthy koi it could be active but there could be fin tear, couldy eye, color would be good.

Your koi pond got filter however do you do water changes? if your water condition is very bad even it is very clear.  Clarity is not always mean good water the advantage of the algae is it got natural cycle if it is overstock during nightime the plants will consume oxygen rather than carbon dioxide.  Maybe your problem is your water is too old you need to do partial water changes.

this one I took in China they are active nice color however if you observe them closely some got fin rot, other got ulcer.

  4. If the water in your friend's pond is stagnant, and remains that way for longer than a few months, his koi will die from all the ammonia that contaminates the water from the fish's waste. It could be that his pond hasn't had the same water for too long, and the fish are just surviving for the time being.

You're doing the right thing by filtering your pond. All fish need a constant flow of new water into the pond because it brings in more oxygen. In a stagnant pond, that stale water will eventually run out of oxygen. So, since you are providing the correct environment for your koi, it could just be that you got a bad batch of fish. Just keep feeding them and see how they do for a while longer. You could always shut off your filter for three days or so to let some algae grow in the pond, since koi love to eat algae.

    Good luck!

  5. yes u could do it but if u want it to stay some what clean get a sucker fish that will clean up some of the algae
