I've seen so much on this. So, to kill all my curiosity, what is the proper size? How many gallons / liters per fish? And you've got to be kidding me when you say 10 gallons per fish. Shew!

  1. typically it's an inch per fish! however, it does depend on the fish.

  2. are you talking about goldfish?

nope no joke lol, goldfish however small really do need all that space, it's true it will grow to the size of it's container but it's organs will grow at a normal rate...now that can't be nice can it? eventually it will die, it's not old age these little goldfish in bowls die of...

fancy goldfish need 10 gallons but a normal/comet/common goldfish actually need 20 as they grow muh larger.

i hope you're talking about goldfish here lol

  3. It depends on the kind of fish. Goldfish really do need 10 gallons per fish - they're very messy, and the filter can only do so much. More than that will end up with ammonia issues etc. and will end up killing the fish. Smaller fish, like danios and harlequin rasboras, only need 2 gallons per fish, but they're shoaling fish so they need at least 5 others of the same kind to be happy. Don't judge a fish by how big it is in the store, either! There's no real rule to size/water volume, but there are some guides online. I found this one helpful: http://www.firsttankguide.net/capacity.p... Good luck!

  4. What fish?

Sure a 10 gallon tank can hold 20 Noen tetras, but it's WAY too small for one Oscar.

If you are thinking goldfish - those little babies you get from the pet shop are just that, babies. A fancy goldfish should grow to 6" or more long. A common goldfish to at least a FOOT long. It would have trouble turning around in a 10 gallon tank.

It's not about the fish when you get them, it's about how big they will grow in a couple of years. I have fish that are outgrowing a 50gallon tank, and my old goldfish is close to a foot long in a friends pond.

Some species, try 50 or 100 gallons PER fish. Pacu and Arowana, start at 300gals.

  5. What I've always heard is 1 gallon per linear inch of adult fish (i.e., a fish that will grow to be 3" long needs 3 gallons of water).

  6. Depends on what kind of fish. Rule of thumb is 1 fish per gallon. I had a 3o gallon tank and had about 15 fish. Average size was about 2 inches each fish. Never had any problems with the community.

  7. There really isn't a specific guideline. Fish are all different. They all need a tank size depending on several factors such as size, activity level, natural habitat, and mainly how much they p**p, With small fish some people use a gallon per inch rule, this is not too good for some fish, if you'd like to know, the best thing is to research specific fish.
