....I am just wondering if there are any other fish that you don't have to have a filter for like betas? I prefer easy maintenance, but I do not wish to harm any.

  1. GoldFish or Guppies just do water changes every week or so

  2. If you want low maintenance than you should get a medium sized tank at least 5 preferably 10 gallon tank with filter (filters eliminate frequent water changes for once a week to every 6 months or so) Things like guppies are low maintenance and have the added benefit of having live babies to watch. Goldfish are also low maintenance watching two goldfish swim in a 10 gallon is quite peaceful and relaxing.

  4. Hi Boo, there aren't any-all fish need filtration because without it they suffocate on their own waste. A filter is the number one essential item when planning for fish keeping. Other essential items include a suitable tank [at least 10 gallons] with a fitted lid & a liquid test kit for your water. Always join a properly moderated fishkeeping forum before spending a single penny & ask the experts advice.

  5. The idea of the filter is to REDUCE the maintenance. With a power filter you dont have to change the water as often, i.e. it's less work.

Now technically it's possible to keep some fish without filters and only minimal water changes, but think small fish, and a HUGE tank. You need enough plants and natural surface area in the tank to set up some biofiltration without the pump and filter media. But few people are willing to dedicate a 50gal tank to a betta or a couple of minnows, as thats about all a 50gal will support without some form of active filtering (or high maintenance water changes)

A large outdoor pond can also support some fish without filtering because of it's size, 100s of gallons, and huge surface area. But filtered it can support MUCH more.

Best option, a big tank, some sort of power filter, and understock the tank to cut down on the maintenance.

  6. A betta really needs a 5 gallon tank with a filter and a heater to live well.  I know people keep them in little plastic cubes and flower vases and they live a few months.  A betta has a lifespan of up to 7 years if kept properly.  A filtered tank is far less work that having to change water and clean a bowl every 3 days.

  7. It's true beta's don't need filters, however you do have to do water changes......BUT guess what you still have to do water changes anyway even if you have a filter.  The thing about a filter is that it does keep the water way clearer then if you didn't have one.

I have 2 male beta's one is in a filtered 7 gallon tank and one is in a filtered 10 gallon.

And if you have a big enough aquarium the only fish I am for sure of that get along with a beta is called White Cloud Mino's.  There very boring looking fish color wise and they don't bother the beta.

By the way, fish are never easy when it comes to maintanance.
