Fisher Price, Laugh & Learn, Learning Home, Product C6327

I've borrowed this toy from a friend who said the sound works intermittently. I put brand new batteries in and the sound and light effects don't appear to be working at all. I haven't tried anything else yet as I thought I'd see what you recommend first.
