Any system of harvesting food from the waters in a selective way, choosing only some species while leaving the rest will always distort the ecological balance, and often result in drastic reduction of the species taken, even their inability to rebuild.

Fisherman's friend is very clearly a selective harvesting system, even more so than a drag net that captures everything.
