Hi all! Well, my friend and I are headed up north to go camping and fish for the next couple of days. We live in Phoenix, Arizona and about 2 hours north, there is a lake called Woods Canyon Lake. We checked and we were informed that they stack the lake with trout every week and it is full. We were just wondering if there is any tips you can provide and what time should we begin? I know it is good going early in the morning and late at night. But as you can tell, I am a city boy for sure. I mean, I love camping but for this trip, I was looking to see if there are any good tips you can provide. Thanks

  1. If your not familiar with what to do use worms. Stocked trout can be very gulible though so experiment thats half the fun.

  2. tie a sinker on the end of your line and tie a hook about six inches up. Make sure the hook is small so the trout cant see it and cover it with power bait (this works because it smells like the food they feed them in the hatchery) Cats as far out as you can and let it sit. Keep the line tight and if the line starts to move and bounce the end of the rod you have a bite. Wait about a second and then pull up hard ( not to hard because it will take it out of there mouths) and then reel it in. You can substitute worms or salmon eggs for power bait if the bites slow. Good luck and go early or late in the day.

  3. I'd agree with the powerbait but I'd tweek it a little - if you're going to keep the fish to eat...  (if not use a regular hook)

    sz 14,16 treble hook >>> 12-20" 4lb leader >>> sz 14 barrel swivel >>> 1/8 or heavier egg sinker

With powerbait color is everything so bring at least 3-4 different colors... these are my favorites in order best luck..

yellow (corn or any yellow powerbait)

    chartruse (or chartruse & white)

    FL Orange

    FL Pink

    White

    bubblegum (yellow & pink)

earthworm and nymph(purple) have never done a thing for me...

Sometimes I've seen people have good luck attaching one of the power maggots to the power bait too.

Lots of good information here... try not to worry about the heat - yeah they will be a little less active - but they will still be hungry. When it gets hot they head for the deep cool water - another thought is if you can find a river or decent size stream that flows into the lake it might provide cool water where they might tend to congregate to find baitfish too.

Here are the regulations (so you can read them over and if you wanted to see if use of a treble hook was legal)

One of these maps will help you find other good places to fish & camp that you may not known about and it usually has good info about the larger lakes / rivers if there is camping/ hunting or any facilities available nearby. I've found it a VERY valuable resource for a mere $20

You can buy the powerbait and just about anything else from this website too....

  4. Again, I have to agree with steelhead and add the 1/8 & 1/4 oz. inline roostertails along with the rebel wee crawl crankbaits. I have found this crankbait to be extremely effective wherever there are rocks and boulders in the water.Crawfish are a natural food source even for stocked trout and the rattles seem to attract the bigger trout. Darn, sounds like an awesome trip, wish I were going. Be safe, have fun and enjoy your adventure!

  5. Well I hate to rain on your parade but it's probably the worst time of year you could have possibly picked as the water is hot, we're in the dog days of summer up here and the fish are deep and scarce.  I don't know if it's a paid pond your heading to but most places around here, ( New England) , stock their properties twice a year in the spring and fall.    I would abandon all the traditional spinners and spoons, and any swimbaits or topwater baits and stock up on egg sinkers that the line will slide through, your gonna want to go deep.  find a chart of the lake your fishing, and head out to the deepest area and drop some nightcrawlers or shiners and you may have some good luck.

Mid september through october in New England the water starts to cool off and you can hammer trout all day long in most of these waters, especially in Maine,  but right now their lazy and their deep.

  6. If their stocked/planted Trout like ya' say then a simple riggin' of split shot (re-useable type), bout' 18-20 inches above a size 8-10 hook, followed up with some Berkley's Power Bait will do ya' just right. If ya' go with PB, take a small portion out of jar, put it in the palm of your hands and applyin' pressure move hands in a circular motion to from a ball then push hook inta' it (will stay on better durin' cast) Also jarred salmon eggs, Inline spinners, say Panther Martins. Might add that Kastmaster spoons will get their attention also. Good luck and "Fish On" ;)...

Note: Planted trout (mostly rainbow species) are pretty docile meanin' their a bit easier ta' catch then your native (been in wild waters fore sometime) ones...

Added: Was somewhat skeptical bout' the lake bein' planted/stocked with Trout EVERY week so did some investigatin' and ya' be right. Link will confirm it ~ scroll down to MOGOLLON RIM (13 lines under it) and viola'. Good luck and hope ya' teach some locals the expertise on catchin' trout ;)...
