Question:

Fishing (UK): can you literally sit on any stretch of water and fish?

Hi! I am new to fishing and was just wandering if this is the case; can you literally sit anywhere on a river, stream or lake (as long as it is not restricted land/water) and fish? Or are you only allowed to fish at certain locations? What are the best parts or a river/ stream etc to fish (in terms of water current, depth, foliage cover etc.)?

It's just that I am going to go fishing for the first time this weekend, on my own, and don't want to sit down somewhere where A) I am not allowed, or B) there is guaranteed to be no marine life at all!

Thanks!

  1. you ned a fishing license. But try fishing off a public dock.

As for saltwater, no. The reel would rust, and be messed up. You need a different reel.

  2. You need a license to fish fresh water, you also need permission from the Land Owner to fish each "beat" of the river, if its a lake you also need permission to fish it.

  3. u need a rod licence whether u fish private or not, u can purchase one of those from the post ofiice or online for i think £3.50 a day, my best advice is go your local tackle shop and speak to the owner as they will know alot of areas and their restrictions, they will also give you advice how to fish those locations which i hope will then lead to you having a great days fishing.

  4. Ok,first of all u can sit anywhere u like at a river but chances r u wont get lots of fish, the fish is concentrated at one part of a particular river at a particular time of a day.Your best bet would be to ask around for those regular angler at that river nicely and just maybe they will tell you something you wouldn't have to waste your time finding out.Because when you r not familiar with that water,it's best to just swallow your pride and ask the correctly.River is very long so you just don't know and can't afford to keep guessing. Also it's best to fish from the low area to high area/ground when u look for them.Cos the smell is always going downstream so when there is no fish from the lowest part then u move up.By doing this u r bound to find those fish soon, very soon and also u get an advantage if there r others fishing higher. Also remember that at the middle part of that stream has no fish, they will be hiding at the bank where the currents r a bit manageable. When u r a novice, don't fish at those area with lots of foliage in or out of the water cos u can easily get a snag.Look for more open area where it is much easier n practice ur cast etc.Fish somewhere that might be seen so when u r in trouble help is nearby cos ur a beginner.Safety is the utmost importance when going fishing just don't take it for granted, being alive is the surest sign that u get fish another day. Those set that u get from argos just not suitable foe sea angling cos the conditions at the surf or out shore r far too much for these inferior set, they will break apart like twigs if something more than 20lb hit it with heavy current drag. Those use for salt r made of anti-rust compounds to protect its integrity and its more durable within its core mechanism to handle stronger abuse for maximum performance. When a 30lb fish hit your hook and make a run,the actual force is more than four times of its initial weight.Even a 9kg drag system would feel the shock. Some r made for freshwater n some saltwater, even different types of fishing like course n shore or fly.For beginner please read more then practice more don't waste your time wondering just real time fishing is the best to learn more. Its never ending just hook for life,I have been fishing for 12years since I got hooked, every week bout 30hours of fishing n cant get enough after u learn another trick.safety first ok?ask what u want bout fishing and I will tell u.
