ive heard rumors that people around my area have caught gar up to 100lbs! ive been fishing for bass and catfish and perch all of my life and have never caught a gar, i would really like to try catching some! what bait or lures should i use? what works better, bait or lures? what are gar like? i know what they look like but do they stay in shallow water hidden under branches or do they like it out in the open down deeper? tell me what you have had the most luck with catching gar?

  1. Down here in Florida you need a scientific license to catch them.

  2. For bait shad large shad. For gear nothing smaller than a Penn 6/0 with 50# test line swivels rated for 200#  Leader wire or fluorocarbon 200-300# test. Float bait with balloon. I prefer fishing deeper holes just below shallow rapids. If you catch a big one use care they can and will hurt you.

  3. it would probably be easier to bow hunt the gar. but you better check the local regulations! hope i helped you out! (best answer?)
