  1. Use cut dead shad about 18" under the bobber.  Let them take it all the way under before setting the hook or use a circle hook and let the fish set it as they swim away.  Use a hook you're willing to lose and cut the line when you get the gar in.  They're useless as far as eating goes, but fun to catch!

  2. It doesn't need to be far at all 1 to 3 feet. Gar tend to strike at the top of the water column!  Use a sharp hook!

  3. Easy one, come out to the lake in Grenada, MS...lol. You'll catch Alligator Gar all day. That spillway is LOADED with them...lol.

Okay seriously, they'll bite on just about anything, including your bobber. You don't need to go far down, you'll be able to see a lot of them scouting the surface water, especially if you go out just as the sun goes down or right before the sun rises. As long as you don't put your bobber down any more than about three or four feet, you should catch them easy. The big ones are a little harder to get in though, because they are fighters.

I've got them on minnows, worms, even shrimp, so you shouldn't have a problem. Heck, we've even pulled them up because they got their nose tangled around the line...lol.

I don't really know why you would want them though, I've heard they aren't very good eating. But more power to you.

    Good luck.

  4. here in south tx people fish for garfishi've seen people taking them out of the water measuring about 7ft. in length.they are surface strikers i have seen people using live shad to chiken necks.the brining them up is where you have to be careful as their hard armor is hard to penetrate with a gaff.although dave said they are useless as food he hasn't had a taste of garfish they are actually ver tasty fish just have to use a machete across the spine to open them up regular filleting methods wont do it.the flesh is white and when deep fried has the same texture and taste as a chicken breast.restaurants even serve them here in south tx. and price is pretty high for a plate of these wonderful underestimated fish.

  6. Some people use frayed nylon rope about 6 inches long. The gar will attack the "lure" and get there teeth caught in the rope.

  7. About one and a half feet, from your drilled bullet lead bellow the float. You only need a small hook, a size 3 should work fine in light wire, if your fishing for alligator gar you will need a heavier hook, about size 2/0.
