I am using fishing line to make a necklace. The line is 20lb test. If I double the line for the necklace will the force of breaking still be 20lb or would the integrity be greater.

  1. I think you'd want to stick with 20lb test, if you go much higher and you are wearing the necklace gets caught on something or someone pulls on it hard you could be hurt. Better to rebuild a necklace than to be seriously injured.

  2. Line strength would double but you may be putting your safety at risk.

  3. Doubling the line would double the strength, however I see no reason to double it for a necklace -- 20 pound is plenty strong enough for that purpose. If you tie a loop of 20 pound line (with a good knot) and try to break the line with your hands, it'll cut into your fingers before it breaks.

Also, nylon monofilament fishing line can hold a bend or a kink. Unless the beads or whatever are pretty heavy, doubling the line may make the necklace stick out rather than hanging naturally.

I'd suggest you use a good fishing knot to make the loop (a blood knot) or fasten the clasps (improved clinch knot) -- ordinary knots like square knots or whatever do not work with fishing line

  4. The folks above have good answers, and you can rest assured that a single 20 lb strand is more than enough to hold together a necklace. It's not like you're going to have somebody hang you with it. But if you double the line, then you will also double the breaking strength as long as you use a properly tied knot on both strands.

  5. One line has 20lb lift strength. 2 has 40lb and 3- 60lb.(same principal as a bungee cord, add more for more strength) I would keep 20lb test diameter sootherwise the line wont be as pliable. There are other types of line that have a higher lb test rating but are the same diameter ad regular 20lb mono here is a link.

  6. It would be greater if you yank on both loops at once, but would be still 20 if you pulled on just one loop.

  7. doubling it will double the strength.
