Question:

Fishing: please help a complete beginner?

Hi there! Basically I have just started to get interested in fishing and I've bought myself a cheap beginners set from Argos. I plan to go out to a local river, sit myself down over the weekend, and see what I can do.

I know that sea fishing- from the beach- is popular in my area (Bristol), and I like the look of it. If I wanted to get involved in this, how different is it to fishing on a lake or stream? Would my little Argos kit be unsuitable for my very first try at sea fishing- and if so, what kit would I need?

Thanks!

  1. Sea fishing is completely different to coarse fishing so your argos beginners set would be unsuitable. To fish the sea you will need to invest in a beach casting rod that is very strong and stiff this will help to cast further and help if you hook into anything big. You will also need a larger reel and sea fishing tackle.

  2. Your kit is fine for catching little Argos fish in a river. At sea you also need a boat.

  3. Go for the saltwater, you will need permission to fish the river or lakes plus a license, its it seems youre in the UK, you don't need a license to fish saltwater there, you're kit will maybe ok for light mackerel fishing but nothing else a heavier rod will be needed for saltwater. Start off with a fixed spool reel

  4. need a surf fishing rod!

  5. Daiwa Saltiga series r ok for me,novice to intermediate but the oceano 4500j that I just gave one to my lil bro.although its consider moderately priced but it'll last.Don't worry too much bout the rod, just any medium action would do.Beginner try a 8footer just nice after u advance to intermediate.might be a bit tricky at first but after a while everyone should be ok.practice more n read more.

  6. Most likely your Argos kit will be too light for saltwater fishing, but that all depends on the species of fish in your area. Your Argos rod would be fine fishing for lane snapper in Florida, but if a snook grabbed your bait it would probably be the end of your rod. Since you are going anyhow (and I admire that) I would suggest looking for other anglers in the areas that you would like to fish and explain to them your interest in fishing and ask what they would suggest. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your outing!

  7. it probably is unsuitable- it is probably not long enough for any serious fishing and the fish won't be close to the shore! if you fish on a river you need to purchase a rod lisence from your post office or online- this is needd just to own the rod and if you are caught by an environment agency baliff you can be fined and have youre equipment taken

    anyway, happy fishing

actually just try it, you can catch little fish and crabs and stuff just with a line, hook and bait- give it a go and let us know if you catch anythin

  8. It's likely your kit will not be suitable for saltwater fishing, especially from the shore. When you salt fish from the shore, you typically need a REALLY long rod (so you can cast out where the fish would actually be located) and a reel built to handle saltwater.

It would be better to stick to freshwater for now and then get you a saltwater setup when you get a little more skilled and have a little more money to spend.

If you do attempt to take the freshwater setup to the sea, then you need to make sure to wash it really well with warm tap water afterward to get all the salt out of the reel. It will wear your equipment out faster using it in the sea, so it's not something I would suggest.

I hope this answers your question. Have Fun!!
