I have a few questions for those who live in southeast michigan who fish.

1. Are there any walleye fish in Lake St. Clair and how deep does the water have to be to catch them?

2. What is the best way to catch walleye? Live bait(if so wich kind), or best lures.

3. Any other tips for going walleye fishing on lake st. clair.

Thanks, Ansil

  1. Hello,

I live in Troy, MI and I fish in Lake St. Clair sometimes.  Right now Walleye are biting in Lake St. Clair in about 8-12 feet of water. I catch Walleye all the time on Berkley Power Bait (leeches).  Anything by Rapala are great lures for Walleye.

  2. I used to live on Lake St. Clair for about eleven years. Next to Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair is, perhaps, the best walleye lake in North America.

Like the other guy said, they are biting right now and you'll likely find them biting in about 12-15 feet of water.

I would often catch my limit on a spinner rig- there is a lure called an "Erie Dearie" that looks like this and you can find them at any bait shop along the lake for about $2.00:

    |

    |

    |  <--line

    8 <-- swivel

    |

    |

O <-- head of lure (pink, yellow, red, or green)

    S <--spinner

    J <-- hook

    {

    {  <-- worm/night crawler with a long trailing tail

Once you find your depth (without weeds around because walleyes like rocky semi-murky bottoms) troll in a boat slowly and let enough line off so that the head of your lure will bounce off the bottom. The lure will look like something feeding off the bottom and bounce along at the speed of your troll. The spinner on the rig will flash the odd flicker of light and the head is bright enough to catch their keen eyesight.

Rapalas will work (you'll want to use an Original Floating with a sinker maybe a foot down the line) but you really have to know what you are doing as far as size, color, and depth is concerned, so I wouldn't suggest using them if you are a beginner.

You can use plastics as well, but I find night crawlers on the Erie Deerie, or even minnows, to produce more fish.

Hope that helped, and enjoy the lake!
