I have a 1/2 oz rat L trap. I am planning on fishing from the shore on a lake that has small and largemouth bass. In the place im fishing, there is a huge weed bed in front of me. what is the best way for me to fish this lure. Im worried about it getting caught in the weeds every time i cast.

  1. I had this situation just today. You simply need to switch out your lure.Get a non-treble hook spinner bait or a topwater buzzbait.Plastic frogs work pretty well on top of weeds. If all you have is this Rat-L-trap then move along the sides of the weedbed.treble hooks will pick up every leaf out there so you're only shot is moving along the sides of the weeds.Which is not actually bad really.Bass like to strike from cover,so you never know.

  2. Keep the rattle trap out of the weed bed or its good chance you will loose it. Those treable hooks grab onto everything. You could remove the treable hooks and replace them with a single hook that has a wire weed guard made on the hook. The snap ring on the rattle trap will allow you to do it very easily. Keep rod tip high when you retreave the lure so it dose not bury up so much in weed bed.

  3. You can either pick a better lure such as a spinner bait or you can burn it over the tops of the weeds.

  4. this is the second answer stop_ has flat smoked on. your bait selection is wrong for weed bed unless the weeds are topped off at 12 feet or so down the ratltrap will cast a mile and it sinks to a level it's weight takes it to. over weedbeds is an evening bite above them as the sun is fading and at noon down in them with worms fished from a boat I think a floutant rapala would do you wonderfully better but they don't cast far. as most all the others suggested spinnerbaits, I see the problem I think immediately of is you are fishing from shore and there will be no finnesse to your cast so when you throw it out there in the wind you will be hitting the surface like a clanging bell and scaring everything away within 20 feet of where it lands. by the time you get the bait over water that wasn't already spooked by a previous cast you will be totally bored with it and it will be an un eventful day fishing. throw a few weedless worms without any weight (the fatter the better)and let them float then just flick your rod (like flicking a fly off your arm with your index finger) and twitch the bait from time to time it will sink a little and reel in a half turn and do it all over again and make sure its weedless and try putting the hook into the side and not the head but most important do not let the sun cast your shadow on the water ever at all finite! fish the shallow before you walk up on it from twenty feet away and use plastic lizards cast them into the water at the edge and again flick the rod after letting it sit fifteen seconds and then do it again. good luck

  5. Rattle Traps are designed to fish "around" weed-beds not "in" them.

They work VERY well when you are casting to the edge of a weed-bed, (or structure) or barely clipping the "top" of a weed-bed.

Otherwise, you should use a weedless lure for any heavy cover situations, (such as a "Texas Rigged" Worm/Senko, Spinnerbait, Jig & Pig, Etc.)

FYI: A 1/2 OZ Rattle Trap may be a bit heavy for clipping the tops of weeds UNLESS your using 17LB + Mono. The heavier line will help keep the Trap from sinking too fast and fouling in the weeds every cast.

Hope this helps? Good luck & Good fishing!
