To go Ocean fishing, will it make a difference if I but a one piece rod or a 2 piece rod? I'm still a rookie fisherman but am going out on a boat and want a good set to buy. Any suggestions? Thanks

  1. For ocean fishing on a boat, a one piece 6-footer is standard. With fishing rods and reels, you usually get what you pay for. The more money it cost usually the better the quality. If you don't fish that much, however, buying a mid price set is worth it.

  2. It would help to know what type of fish you plan on going after to help with your rod selection, however, a 6 foot medium action 1 pc. rod with a levelwind reel would be a good all around choice to get started. You can catch a lot of different species with this type of set up and as Artie stated... enjoy!

  3. get a one piece 8 foot heavy action pitching stick with a good to intermediate quality level wind reel learn to cast it and enjoy.

  4. You should ask the manufacturer.

  5. A one-piece rod is better for fishing, because the ferrule (the joint where the pieces fit together) is a weaker spot, and affects the action. The only reason for a 2-piece is for storage and transportation.

The actual rod and reel you should get really depends on where you're fishing and what you're fishing for -- without that information, any recommendations people make are just nonsense. As an example, if you're fishing out of southern California for sand bass, a 12 to 15-pound rig is appropriate; if you're fishing for yellowtail in the same waters a 20 to 30-pound rig is what you'll want. (The numbers are the strength of line you'll use, the rod and reel should be matched to that.)

Short (6-foot) rods are made for bottom fishing or trolling; longer rods are made for casting, in some parts of the world people don't cast off boats.

Check with some local bait & tackle shops for pertinent advice, as they'll likely know a lot about fishing in your local area.

  6. a one piece rod will probably be enough, it sounds like you are a bit "heavy set", so you shouldn't need any support to hold the rod.  I do suggest eating more salads.  I'm always at the buffet in Palmdale, I hope I don't catch anything.
