Fitting a new kitchen ceiling light?

I have bought a new kitchen spotlight it says it needs to be earthed but the only wires coming out of the ceiling are two black and two red how do I earth it ?Any help would be appreciated .Thanks

  1. Wire it wrong and it can kill you. There's a good reason they license electricians.


  2. if you don't know what your doing leave it alone and call someone who does... if your in the uk all electrical work needs to be carried out by a certified electrician or your house insurance can be null and void..

  3. To earth it you need to run a separate cable back to the fuseboard. Or buy a CLASS 2 fitting (no earth required).

    Anyone may legally do like-for-like replacement if they are COMPETENT.

  4. bein's it is a light, It will operate with -out being earthed(grounded), you can hook it up without and it will work, If you had to ground it, you would have to pull a green wire to the center ot the kitchen, from? the switch, upstairs above it? It is a pain in the arss, and then this wire would be hooked to your grounding system, there aren't any white wires up there?? white, and green are bonded in the panel box, well in the states they are, you could tie to the white up there, there should be one.

  5. If you have to ask this question you are not capable of doing the job, call in an electrician. Better to be safe than sorry.
