Five homers and Sabathia’s seven strikeouts helps Yankees crush the Orioles 15-3 – MLB Update
American League franchise, the New York Yankees have completely outclassed league rival, the Baltimore Orioles in a 15-3 triumph, in front of the 39,054 spectators at the Oriole Park, on Saturday, April 23.
It was an impressive outing for the Yankees, as they shined in both forms of the game. The veteran slugger, Alex Rodriguez, led the game off with an RBI double, followed by Robinson Cano’s single off the Orioles starter Brad Bergesen, in the top of the first
inning. Yankees’ top starter, Carlson Charles Sabathia, tossed fastballs up to 94 mph to trouble the opposition.
The Bergesen made an impressive comeback and did not allow any run in his next four innings, but his effort was not enough to clinch the game from the Yankees. The Yankees slugger, Russell Martin shattered Bergesen’s thrust building spell, launching a three-run
grand slam in sixth.
Seeing the rising impetus of the Yankees, the Orioles’ skipper Buck Showalter relieved Bergesen with Jason Berken, who tossed an impressive no-hit seventh inning. Sabathia, however, went shaky in the bottom of the inning and gave a three-run homer to the
Orioles batter, Adam Jones.
The Yankees batters, however, were not prepared to stop the swing of the bat and this time took on Berken, for their homering streak. Jorge Posada started the seven-run eighth inning with a huge two-run homer, which was also his sixth of this season. Russell
Martin then touched the second of the game and the sixth of the season.
The Orioles changed Berken with Clay Rapada, but the move did not work as he allowed in singles and walks. Mark Teixeira walked on Rapada’s wild pitch, while Derek Jeter moved to the third and Curtis Granderson, to the second. The Orioles then relived Rapada
with Josh Rupe, but the move did not pay-off either.
With all the bases loaded, Alex Rodriguez faced the first pitch of Rupe and launched a crushing four-run grand slam to the left field. The flurry of home runs continued and Brett Gardner splashed the fifth homer off Rupe’s pitching in the ninth inning, taking
the lead to 15-3.
Sabathia pitched eight innings and allowed just three runs on six hits, walked one and made seven strikeouts to earn his win, with a 2.73 ERA. Carlyle pitched a perfect one inning for a save. Sabathia was so impressive that he made Orioles manager, Buck
Showalter to acknowledge his quality.
Showalter, while speaking highly of the pitcher said, "He's become a complete pitcher. I think I told you all before what a complete pitcher he is. Holding runners, secondary stuff -- he's a tough challenge, and it certainly doesn't help matters when you
get down there, 3-0."
All hurlers of the Orioles went for at least a run. Starter Bergesen again failed to win his first game of the season, allowing six runs and two balls.
Bergesen said, "By no means is it a good outing whatsoever. Physically, it's weird. You feel very good at times, but the damage is there. You see the line and how many runs they put up tonight, which is never a good thing. You try to take the positives,
forget the negatives and just continue to build and go from here."
Berken allowed three runs, while Rapada gave three runs on one hit and Rupe also gave two homers. The Yankees have moved to the most number of homers this season, with 35 grand slams in 17 games. With the form they are in, other teams will be aware of their
game and will be looking to bring an end, to their terrific run of form.
