There are five hoses I've seen on older locomotive where today there would be three, for each locomotive's braking system, but what are the other two? Steam generation for passenger service?

  1. Brake pipe (puts air through the train) Actuating pipe (used to keep the brakes released on the engine when wanting to apply the brakes to the train only) Application & Release pipe (also called 'BC Equalizing' on the older engines you describe) which operates the Engine Brake (aka the 'independent brake') Main Reservoir (connects all the engines main air reservoirs together) and the last two not found on newer locomotives being the Forward and Rear Sander air.  These are now controlled electronically via the MU cable between each unit.

But as of today, you'll only find them on any GP9s or SD9s still running around out there today.
