Five potential contenders for French Open 2012 – Tennis Special (Part One)
Angelique Kerber
German number one, Angelique Kerber, has recently joined the list of the Top-10 players on the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) Tour and everyone would be surprised to see her amongst the list of probable French Open champions
this year. If someone has watched her game play in the recent times, they would agree to me that she has all the quality to oust different top seeded players at any surface. Two titles already under her belt, she has the one of the world’s fastest forehand
return in her armoury. A terrific season must be rounded off with a Grand Slam title and there is no better time to be in supreme run of form just a week away from the French Open.
Quarter-final finish in Stuttgart, third round exit at Mutua Madrid Open and the semi-final appearance in Rome are the highlights of her form at the clay court. She might not be fit to comprehensively defeat the likes of the Top-3
players at the moment but she is definitely capable of pulling up an upset on her day.
The German tennis ace cached the limelight after winning the first title of the season at the hard courts of Open GDF Suez in Paris. She will be returning to the same arena to commence her French Open campaign at the clay courts.
She has defeated Sabine Lisicki, Julia Goerges, Maria Sharapova, Marion Bartoli, Li Na, Jelena Jankovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova in the year that has brought the best out of her. So, there is absolutely no doubt that she can repeat
the heroics again at the field in Paris.
I would not be shocked if she is able to clinch the title in Paris. Ending the tour of Rome in the semi-final stage, Kerber is my fifth favourite player to win her maiden Grand Slam crown at the Roland Garros French Open.
Serena Williams
American number one, Serena Williams, is in sublime form at the moment. She stunned everyone by winning the Family Circle Cup at Charleston but the major surprise came in the Mutua Madrid Open when she slaughtered the likes of
reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the final. It seemed like she was playing some minnow and never looked in any sort of trouble at all.
The speed meters at the courts may be showing the speed of Williams serve around 10kmph lower than she used to when she was in her 20’s but no one can spot that from a naked eye. The pace is still good enough to beat any active
player at any surface. She missed her chance at the Australian Open tournament but her form at the moment is terrific. She was my third favourite tennis player to win the French Open but her recent injury just back injury just hints a downturn in her game
play. Li is the one who has impressed at the clay court and took Williams place. So, she drops one place to number four in my list of potential French Open 2012 winners.
