Five ways you would change the NHL?

Yahoo! Hockey blogger Puck Daddy is currently running a series with entitled "5 ways I'd Change the NHL" featuring guest bloggers. He wrapped it up today with his own 5 changes.

Now that he is done, it's your turn. Gary Bettman is at the unemployment office in NYC, you have been hired as his replacement. You get 5 things to fix in your first day on the job, what are they going to be?

1. As with the others, no more instigator rule.

2. No more asinine stoppages in play with delay of games for pucks that fly over the glass.

3. No touch icing.

4. Shootout overtimes are done.

5. No more markets that cannot or will not support a team. Which in turn means Hamilton, Quebec City,Saskatoon,Winnipeg,Portland or Seattle get a franchise.

There are plenty I would do.

1. Bring back ESPN and ABC and get rid of VS and NBC and put the All Star Game back on network television.

2. Get rid of some of the southern teams like, Nashville, Florida, Atlanta.

3. Bring back ties.

4. Be more lienent when it comes to fighting penalties. Such as get rid of the rule where you are thrown out of the game if you get into a fight within 5 minutes left in the game.

5. Play everyteam at least 2x's

1) Align the teams as they do in soccer with Division 1 and Division 2 tables that also use a similar playoff system. Perhaps basing relegation at the start on the market size then letting the teams themselves earn their places for the second season under the new alignment system. If small market teams can show the big market teams how to be successful - then all the better.

2) Adjust the rulebook, taking out some rules, definitely lighten up on obstruction calls, and making Kerry Fraser give up the styling gel.

3) Let the fans decide by vote to get rid of the ownership based on team performance over 5 years.

4) Let the teams run their own websites and make an NHL Television Network.

5) Instituting a mandatory (and lower) decibel level for music at all arenas.

1) No more instigator.

2) No more penalty for shooting the puck over the glass.

3) 3 points for a win, 2 for a OT win, 1 for a OT loss; keep OT format the same.

4) No Touch Icing. Someone will get killed someday with touch icing.

5) Move Phoenix, Florida and Nashville to Winnipeg, Quebec City and Southern Ontario.

1. Rework the salary cap so that it can only increase at 15% a year max, but still tied to league revenue, including better revenue sharing.

2. Get rid of the trapezoid. We should not be punishing the goalies for being good at something.

3. Tone down the instigator. Change it to a fine after 5 cases, but no extra on ice penalty.

4. Every team plays every other team at least twice, home and away.

5. No touch icing- icing still waved off if the forward has an obvious advantage over the defender. If no such advantage exists, no touch is necessary.

6 (bonus, but still quite important) : 3, 2, 1 system. 3 points for a regulation win, 2 for a OT win, and 1 for an OT loss. keep calculating the old way for record keeping though.

Also, no more shootout. Sudden death 4 on 4 for 10, then 3 on 3 until it's over. that won't take long, go back and watch the young stars game from this year's all star game.

7.  Allow owners to keep teams wherever they put them because it was more profitable.

Honestly guys, teams moved out of those places or were never there for a goddamned reason. Sentiment is fine for a junior team, but you need population and corporate support for an NHL one.

8: Versus can stay for monday and Tuesday, but buy out the exclusive part of their contact and let ESPN play on Friday and Saturday. NBC sunday still. Let ESPN play the games for free if you must, the exposure helps.

1.Move the Atlanta Thrashers north.I can make this reason 2,3, and 4 but I wont.

2.Market ALL the great young players in the league.Toews,Iginla,Nash and Vinny get the same exposure as Crosby and Ovie.

4.The goalie plays the puck?Free game to be hit and vice versa.

5.Ask for his resignation and the owners to hire Pat Croce to run the league.Only people from Philly will get that but he turned Iverson into a likable guy.

1.Fire Bettman. Hire Don Cherry as the new NHL commissioner

2. 3 points for a win, 0 for a loss and 1point for a tie, if after a 20 minuit 4on4 OT its still a tie both teams leave with one point each

3. No more instegator rule

4.Relocate nashville the panthers and the coyotes to Quebec, Hamilton and Winnipeg

5.Make every team play every team in every arena every year

1) Eliminate the shootout- play a 4 x 4 for 20 minutes. Allow teams to go 2 men down if they commit that many penalities.   4 X 2 should end it quickly. If nobody scores, then it's a tie.

1a) In case the owners attempt to lynch me over #1, then 3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an OT win, and 1 point for a shootout win, with NO points for a loss.  

2) Free entrance and parking for pre-season games( Or charge a dollar).  Get families interested in coming. Maybe they will like it enough to pay once the season starts.

3) Get rid of the instigator rule. There are some players that need to be taught a lesson (Are you listening Avery?).

4) More "Family-friendly" zones at arenas, where you aren't allowed to buy or drink alcoholic  beverages, and profanity will get you kicked out. Why should a young kid be subjected to some screaming drunk yelling "Potvin Sucks" then the blast of expletives that follows.

5) Contraction or relocation, not expansion.

1. Expand the nhl into other Canadian cities like Winnipeg, and Saskatoon.

2. Get rid of the salary cap.

4. Add Microphones to the refs so you know why they are penalizing a player or saying it's not a goal

5. Get hockey on ESPN again.
