I am building a fixed gear bike and I was wondering if I could use a rear wheel with multiple gears and convert it into a locked fixed gear without replacing the entire wheel.

  1. Sure can, Jenson and a few others sell the parts to do what you are asking. They sell both kits one for hard tails and an other for full susp.

  2. Yes.

You can use the surly Fixxer conversion kit as previously mentioned in the other post for shimano cassette hubs.

You can also thread on a cog and a left-handed bottom bracket lockring onto the freewheel hub and then use some locktite to seal it in place.

Of course, the latter suggestion is somewhat shoddy and may not hold up if you backpedal real hard, so the absolute safest method is to simply replace the hub with proper track hub with a proper track lock ring.  This is probably the safest method.  New hubs are $30-60 bucks generally and you can probably ebay a new track wheel for like $80.

  3. I asked the same question recently. The short answer is, "Yes, you can".
