there is a grinding/scraping/creaking noise in my bottom bracket on my '76 raleigh super course fixie... i just recently replaced the cranks chain, wheel set nothing is rubbing on the bike which leads me to believe that it has to be in the bottom bracket... any ideas as to what it is?

  1. I know that fixed gear generally have stronger components than geared road bikes but does it still make the noises when you're out of the saddle? The reason I asked is because my seatpost was making simlar noises on my road bike until I bought a stronger, longer one. I wouldn't cancel out the bottom bracket idea but is there any flex in your crank? If neither of these two actions are occuring, I would agree with you that it is the bottom bracket. Good luck.

  2. Drop the chain from the front and spin the cranks....are they binding or can you feel roughness? If so, the bottom bracket adjustment could be tight. If it used caged bearings, is it possible that they were installed upside down when you put everything back together? Take it apart and examine the parts.....look closely at the bearings and cages for anything that's not normal, and take a look at the cups. Also, if you used a plastic accordian grunge sleeve thingy over the spindle, sometimes they come loose and can rub against the spindle or bearings while you pedal....it's not a loud noise when that happens, though.

Other than that, just check to see that things are adjusted properly and be sure to grease the cups....wouldn't cause a grinding noise, but dry cups can sometimes cause a creaking noise under torque.

Hope that helps.....post back again if you need more help with it! :o)

  3. just take it in to your local bike shop and they will fix it...but u should upgrade that's a pretty old bike the new stuff is so much lighter
