Fixing a phone??? help!?

We recently just bought a phone at a thrift store, its really neat and old fashioned looking, but with all the modern hook ups.

It says on the front that it is a "Thomas Collectors Edtion...country telephone 1927" in other words...a modern phone made to look like one from 1927.

So our problem is that we hooked it all up and we can call to my cell phone and my cell phone rings, and then we call FROM my cell phone and the new/old phone rings...BUT I cant hear what the person is saying and they cant hear me?

anyone with knowledge of phones ... what could the problem be? and is it fixable?

I hope this all makes sense, as im not very good with technical terms..haha.

If you need anymore info, I will certanly give it.

Thanks for any and all help!

  1. The first thing to do is try a different receiver cord. (the one from handset to phone) If this doesn't fix, remove cap from receiver end of handset and see if both wires connected. If they are. remove phone housing and check jack where receiver cord plugs in. There will be 4 wires coming from jack to phone network. If they are all connected, The problem is major.
