Question:

Fixing a wardrobe door opening that's out of plum?

Hi all, we have recently purchased a new house and the drought in our area has caused the foundations in the back of the house to move slightly. Due to this a couple of the back bedrooms are slightly out of level. My problem is that the wardrobe frames in these rooms are not plum causing irregular gaps at the top and bottom of the doors. The outside edge of the doors are fine. What's the best way to 'hide' this without going to the big job of redoing the foundations? Trim the doors to match the opening?

Thanks, Sam.

  1. Hello Sam,

If you have room, it is possible to put shims behind your hinge plates in the casing to adjust the door to match the casing.  Trimming or sanding is possible, but if you have hollow core doors you need to make sure you don't cut or trim into the cavity.  For shims, thin sheet metal works well.  Be sure to glue dowels in the old s***w holes to make the new fit tight.

  2. Sam water your house. Get you some of the black soker hoses at wal-mart and put them out about 18" from your slab and water till the ground swells back to your slab. If your foundation has not completely failed it could push it back into place. Keep it watered till you come out of drought conditions. Just keep the ground around your house moist deep. If you go out side and see the dirt pulled back away from your slab water till it is back up against it. Then worry about the door.
