Question:

Fixing (bike rack) to concrete block wall ?

I wanted to fix a bike rack to a concrete block wall.

I tried drilling a hole slightly smaller (diameter) than the anchors but the same length.

When I put in the anchors they just pulled out leaving me two "large" holes in the wall. Right now I filled the holes with concrete crack filler pushed the anchors back into the bike rack, pushed the anchors into the concete filled holes and then taped the whole contraption to the wall. (Hope my wife doesn't see it before it dries).

1) Does anyone think this will work ?

2) If it doesn't work, what did I do wrong and how do I do it right ?

Any advice, gratefully accepted.

Thanks.

  1. you could always build a cheap stand out of 2x4s.

2 taller 2x4s for the legs, one on top to connect the 2 together, liquid nails the whole thing to the cement walls with concrete tapping screws.

this way you can connect hooks to the wood and not the concreat itself.

spelling errors, yes i know haha

  2. what sort of anchor did you use ? sounds like you used too big of a drill bit for the anchor . they make screws for anchoring to concrete that come with the correct drill bit.

  3. It might hold, but likely will only be a temporary fix.

If possible, the best way to anchor a rack to a concrete wall is to drill through the entire wall, and anchor the rack using a large U-bolt with a metal support plate on the other side of the wall.

This will provide the best structural support.

If this is not an option, you can use a 2x4 support.

Anchor a 2x4 to the wall at top and bottom of rack using masonry screws or expanding inserts.  Then anchor the bike rack to the 2x4's.

Side tapped holes and epoxy filler is another options, but will not be as solid.

  4. Make sure that when you put in the 7/16 hole for the shields (leaded) that you place them in the mortar area.  When you install the lag bolts they will expand the shield for a good hold.  Plastic is cheap.
