Fixing wood fence in backyard that dog has gnawed away at???

I am not great at repairs and fixing things... but I need to make it so my dog doesn't get out of the back yard. There is a wooden fence and the gate portion has a latch at the top. There is also a steel pole thing that goes into the cement.... not sure what is up with that. I know its kinda hard to help me like this, but any ideas are welcomed. Thanks!

Is your dog a digger, or a jumper? Our last fence leaper would take a running leap and go over the top. We screwed horizontal boards to the top supports of the fence, and he stopped trying to get out. He weighed 50 pounds, but I don't think it would have worked if he was heavier.
