Flame Wars: Battlefield 3 versus Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - 1.2
The analysis on Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 may have been a tad on the short side, but this is only the first round of Flame Wars, and seeing how the game has not hit the market yet, it will not be able to match the game blow for blow.
In fact, think of this as the pre-match warm-up for both sides, or rather games, with the real battle beginning when Modern Warfare 3 also hits the market next month (November).
After briefly acquainting ourselves with the main points of Modern Warfare 3, it is time now to move on to its opponent, which is also a heavyweight in the world of gaming,
Battlefield 3.
The true successor to the 2005 title, Battlefield 2, the third instalment in the series is set to shun its PC only tag and release on consoles as well.
It is here that some might be slightly confused and ask the question, ‘what about the Bad Company series?’ to which we will take a deep breath, mutter the word ‘noob’ and respond, ‘ those were offshoots of the series, this is the real deal.”
True, the developers and the publishers of both games are the same, DICE and EA respectively, yet in the end both the Bad Company games were more of a dry run, a test or experiment, if you will and have led up to the beast that is Battlefield 3.
Built on the monstrously powerful FrostBite 2.0 engine, the game looks stunning and gives gamers an unparalleled sense of immersion.
First things first, the game is the same Battlefield formula gamers have become accustomed to over the years, but it was been improved, tweaked, streamlined and enhanced in almost every department.
While the beta disappointed many, with its lack lustre sound and graphics, the retail version is an entire new beast altogether.
Some of the features in the game’s multiplayer mode did not make it past the chopping block, yet in the end the moves, or rather the axes, seem to have justified themselves.
Having said all that, the game has not had a smooth ride. While it did not suffer from the major leaks that its’ closest competitor Modern Warfare 3 did, it did encounter a number of issues of its own.
The most significant came in the form of the fans’ response to the multiplayer beta, which was slated for being substandard, even by Beta standards.
Also the developers were working under an immense amount of pressure, with EA allocating a $50-million budget for marketing the game. Most of which went into advertisements which slated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
In fact, whether EA admitted it or not, Battlefield 3 always seemed to be under the shadow of its illustrious rival and a look at some of the adverts for the game will back up that claim.
One particular advertisement, which ended with the tagline, “Above and beyond the Call”, made the fact that EA knew they were fighting an uphill battle against Activision all the more evident.
Posting initial sales figures around the 3-million units sold mark, Battlefield 3 seems to have gotten off to a promising start, but the true test will come when Modern Warfare 3 joins the party in November.
