Flashback to 2010: Michael Schumacher returns to Formula 1 – Formula 1 Special
After winning seven championships, it was announced by Ferrari that Schumacher will be retiring from Formula 1 driving and will not race in season 2007. He then got the place of an advisor in the company.
The fans of Schumacher were sad at the news however times moved on until 2009 when it was again announced that the champion will be coming back to circuit racing for Mercedes. The news was a great surprise for the spectators and his return was compared with
Niki Lauda and Nigel Mansell.
His return to Formula 1 was followed by his participation in the race replacing injured Massa for Ferrari. That participation in the sport freshen his interest in the sport and he accepted the offer by Mercedes.
The First official race of 2010 he started was Bahrain Grand Prix whereas his first official drive of Mercedes was in February 2, 2010 in an official test scheduled in Valencia. Schumacher had the support of his fans and he was able finish the race at 6th position.
The race was won by Fernando Alonso of Ferrari whereas the second and third places were attained by Felipe Massa teammate of Alonso and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.
The Bahrain GP witnessed some incidents over the circuit when 7 drivers were retired from the race. Only Karun Chandhok of HRT suffered an accident over the circuit he had started the race at the 24 grid.
Schumacher started the race at the 7th gird and finished at 6th position. It was a memorable moment when the German champion was being seen over the circuit in his driving suit. His fans had expected that he will win but he could not.
It was the first race hosted by Bahrain and the debut for Lotus, Hispania and Virgin. In our opinion, it was a turning point, but a bad luck for Mercedes because they had thought that Schumacher will be able to give them the same impressive change as he
had given it to Ferrari earlier. Perhaps they did not realise that along with the skills of the driver a competitive car is required. A driver cannot do anything empty handed.
In his period with Mercedes Schumacher faced a lot of criticism. People said that the veteran driver has grown old and he should retire but Schumacher kept his focus over the sport and continued with his career.
It happened earlier this year that Schumacher did not respond to the renewal of his contract with Mercedes which created room for Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton will be driving with Mercedes in the next 2013 season.
