My lil nephew is one and a half and he knows starter words like mama, dada, hi, bye, and cat and someone told me for his age he's supposed to know about 20 words so is it too early for flashcards? How do I make a game outta it if it is to early for him but for the future cause he's currently not in daycare but he will be soon.

  1. there is far too many people worrying about should my child be doing this by this age and a lot of people trying to out do each other. there is plenty of time for learning words he should just enjoy playing as this teaches communication and helps develop there skills with interaction with others.

  2. Wow! 20 words.

My first daughter could speak in sentences at that age but my youngest refused to talk until she was 15 months.

Does your nephew have older siblings or older kid relatives that *do the talking for him?*

If that is the case, he probably KNOWS more words- he's just too lazy to speak them. As was the case with my youngest.

If you want to make flashcards, my biggest suggestion is color flashcards and animal flashcards. Those are the most fun for toddlers.

Teaching him colors and animals will increase his vocabulary.

When he has those down, start on numbers and letters.

Don't try to give him *words* flash cards. Too confusing and it's mean to force a child to try to read those before they're ready. (Not that you would! lol)

  3. He is just fine, all kids speak when they are ready. I would not try flashcards with him, but you can start just going around the house and telling  him what everything is, like go in the kitchen/dining room and say table and point to it. But best of all just play and love him and spend time with him, he will talk more when he is ready. my nephew hardly talked at his age either and now never shuts up LOL
