It's starting to go away, although I now have a headache and my vision is blurry. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and what I should do?

  1. Almost certainly a migraine headache.

A bright, curved, twinkling "caterpillar" slowly drifting across the vision is pretty much indicative.

If you've not had one before, you do need to report it to your doctor, so it's on record, and the very rare other possibilities can be thought about.

(ischaemic attack on optic nerve, or to occipital region of brain... Edit: a retinal detachment?  Not impossible but it wouldn't normally go away, and has no association wioth headaches.  Not a prime suspect at all.)

Most migraines come with some of a whole range of symptoms, but few people are unlucky enough to get the whole set.  See below.

  2. go see an eye dr right away! could be a retinal detachment,

very serious, not to be played around with, go to EYE DR. RIGHT AWAY!

  3. flashing is always a SERIOUS sign.  when someone calls into our office with signs of flashing and the optometrist can't see him/her immediately, we always recommend going straight to the ER. like people have already mentioned, it could be a sign of retinal detachment and it's always better to be safe than sorry!

  4. I had the EXACT same problem and it turned out to be a detached retina, which I had surgery for. The flash started near the top of my eye and traveled downward. They only lasted for like half a second and only appeared every once in a while. Then one day when I woke up one half of my vision in my eye was blurry and the other half was fine Like I had a vertical line separating the two. I strongly suggest you get it looked at IMMEDIATELY!!!! I almost waited too long, any longer, according to the eye doctor, and I would have went blind.I don't mean to scare you but,I would get that looked at before it is too late.

dont go to the emergency room though, you wont get the right treatment
