Flashing question mark when i start up macbook! HELP!!?

Question

I have a 13-inch: Black 2.4GHz Macbook

I was surfing the web when it stopped responding.

I held down the start button and it shut down.

Waited for a couple seconds and attempted to

start it again. Then the Flashing Question Mark

within a folder popped up. I googled what that

meant and obvious it's bad but can anyone break

it down for me and what can I do?
