you see demonstraitions of kung fu and thier able to do flips and gymnastic stuff and then you see stuff like krav maga were they are also in great shape but they look like its purely to win.

wich one would be better (please explain your argument)

also could being able to do thoughs flips and stuff ever help you in martial arts, like if you had to chase someon and jump over stuff and that?

  1. For a guy to be able to do all the "flashy stuff", he has to be a pretty good athlete.

Generally speaking, a fight is going to be won by criteria like: experience, speed, timing, power, balance, endurance and reaction.

It's not going to be won by what color belt someone wears or what style of martial arts they do.

Athletes are generally stronger in all those categories other than experience.

That's one of the reasons that wrestlers are so successful in MMA, because wrestlers are usually great athletes.

The other problem here is that people think those styles that do "flashy stuff" don't have "down to business stuff".  We do both, and train both.  Only a select few have the ability to pull of the flashy stuff.

Personally, I love watching Wushu.  But at the same time I can appreciate the hard core, efficient self defense techniques we teach to the police and FBI.

I don't think training the flashy stuff is a waste of time, it's fun and it's exciting.  If you can do the flashy stuff, than you can certainly do the hardcore stuff too.

  2. Ehhh.....Wushu is truly a horrible stain on Chinese Martial Arts, look at it this way, with Gymnastics, one is flexible, fluid, and quick, while with Krav Maga, you are efficient and safe. And yes, Wushu does help in chases but with Krav Maga, there is no chase, they're already unconcious. I'm not saying Chinese Martial Arts are inferior, in fact, most of the time, it's better, with Choi Lay Fut and Wingtsun, just don't judge it as a whole.

  3. down to earth, hands down

which would you rather fight a guy on the street with?

  4. watashi ha michi ni mayotteshimaimashita ........ chotto tetsudatte itadakemasenka?  WTF is this dude  on about?

  5. Well, some martial arts haves forms which are kind of flashy but that does not necessarily mean that the art is just about flash. Let's take Chung Do Kwan for example. As a style of Tae Kwon Do, it has poomse (forms) but it also gets down to business throwing kicks, punches, knees, and elbows to key strike point to knock the opponent out. However, some styles are just about flash (some forms of Kung Fu). I only take styles that work. To your question about flips.... flips will not do you any good in my opinion but you don't need to be able to roll and do break falls. I'd go with Krav Maga because they teach you to fight to win. It's a combat martial art like most of the arts I take.

  6. man this question is stupid.

+ me if you like my answer.

  7. Every one should use bas ruttens self defense techniques everthing is a weapon stab to the liver kick to the groin ok or to h**l with it all and be a law abiding citizen and concealed carry a 1911 and train in stress fire situtions and never be beat

  8. You are referring to "Martial Arts", emphasis on the arts, and comparing it too a self defense system. Krav  Maga is not for competition. Separate demonstrations from defense. Good Luck.

  9. down to business ma obviously.the flashy stuff is all show and no go.yeah it might work in the movies where you can hit someone 25 times, kick them thirty times, stab them 10 times then empty a uzi into them and then they get up kick your *** but in the real world it doesn't happen like that.

  10. It depends if you want to LOOK tough or BE tough.

  11. It all depends on your personal objectives.

If you are in competition with YOURSELF, you may want to go for the flashy stuff. Just remember all the out-takes at the end of the Jackie Chan movies when he falls flat on his face!

If your objective is to learn a self defense technique, stick with the basics.

    This is the difference between:

    Martial ARTS and

    MARTIAL Arts.

  12. stupid question this is basically which is the best martial art question again.

no martial art is better than any other. sure it might be better on someways but the other martial art will make up for it in otherways.

  13. The flashy stuff is really useful if you can actually land them on your opponent.  But, chances are that the more down-to-earth moves in Martial Arts will be a better bet in a fight/competition.
