Flat Out prepares for the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park
The 5-year-old Preston Stables owned horse, Flat Out, is being readied by trainer Scooter Dickey for the next year, and the experienced horse will start his 2012 campaign with the all important Grade 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park on 11 February, 2011,
at about 1 1/8 miles on dirt as the race would be exclusive for 3-year-olds and up.
The Florida bred son of Flatter, out of mare Cresta Lil by Cresta Rider, Flat Out breezed an easy half mile for the first time since shipping locally at the start of December as he covered the distance of half mile in 46.79 seconds for trainer Scooter Dickey
on 20 December, 2011, at Gulfstream Park.
Flat Out covered the opening quarter mile for his half mile work in 23.13 seconds and despite a strong wind coming in the opposite direction, Flat Out battled rough conditions to finish it up in 23.66 seconds.
The Scooter Dickey trained horse then galloped out five eights in 1 minute and 0.41 seconds. He is exiting a third place finish in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap to winner Wise Dan.
Under jockey Alex Solis, Flat Out at Churchill Downs on 25 November, 2011, in the 1 1/8 mile test over at the dirt course, was expected to finish strong, but couldn’t best Wise Dan and the runner up Mission Impazible.
In the 2011 season, Flat Out out of eight starts in his current campaign finish just twice off the money, once in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs on 18 June, 2011, he finished sixth and recently in his penultimate start in the Grade
1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, Flat Out finished in fifth to winner Drosselmeyer.
He turned in two back to back second place finishes in the middle of the season when he finished second to Tizway in the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap and second again to Havre de Grace in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga back in September.
The biggest win of the season for Flat Out was in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.
