Flat Out to resume his journey in Monmouth Cup Stakes
Preston Stables’ 6-year-old horse, Flat Out, is all set to make his way back to the racecourse in the $200,000 Monmouth Cup Stakes, to be held at Monmouth Park this weekend.
It will be his debut outing for the Hall of Fame trainer, William I. Mott, after he transferred from Scooter Dickey’s barn in February this year. Bred by Nikolaus Bock in Florida, the horse was last seen in the Group 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park, where
he finished fifth behind Hymn Book.
In the hands of A. Solis, he was not impressive in the beginning and despite the fact that the horse tried his best to trouble the leaders in the final moments, it was an impossible task for him.
Flatter’s son has not yet showed anything decent this year. He made a disastrous seasonal comeback in January, when finishing at bottom of the table in the Grade 3 FT Lauderdale Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
Last year’s Jockey Club Gold Cup hero looked completely out of form in both of his trips this year, but has a good chance of making progress under the supervision of the new handler.
"He had been given a freshening before I got him. So we're just bringing him back off of a short vacation. We're trying to get ready for some of the bigger races down the road, but this would be a nice race to win, of course, a flat mile. At this point we
need to get him started," Mott said of Flat Out.
The six-year-old has run many good races in the hands of A. Solis. His last triumph was also under his regular jockey in October last year, when he upset the 13-10 favourite, Stay Thirsty, and Drosselmeyer in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes at Belmont Park.
Flat Out recently did some very fine workouts and the handler is completely satisfied with the runner’s preparations for the Monmouth challenge.
"He's been very willing, he's done what we wanted him to do, and although he's certainly not screwed down 100%, if he'll run well and come out of it good I think we'll be right where we need to be with him," he remarked.
