Flat Out turned in his first work out of the New Year, going five furlongs over Gulfstream Park’s turf course
Flat Out turned in his first work out as a newly turned 6-year-old horse on 1 January, 2012, when trainer Scooter Dickey sent him out for five furlong workout over the Gulfstream Park’s turf course, which he completed in 1 minute and 0.35 seconds.
Preston Stables owned, Flat Out, is coming off a third place finish in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs on 25 November, 2011, over a distance of 1 1/8 miles to winner Wise Dan and runner up Mission Impazible.
“He worked good. I don’t know how that compares to whom else worked, but I was pleased with it,” said Dickey.
Flat Out registered the fastest of three workouts on the day at Gulfstream Park’s turf course, which also gives trainer Scooter Dickey a clearer picture on where to run his 6-year-old horse.
Things have to be planned out in accordance to Flat Out’s ultimate goal of the early part of the season, the Grade 1 Donn Handicap, and the thing to decide for him is whether to run him on turf or dirt building up to the Grade 1 event.
Right now the Florida bred son of Flatter, out of mare Cresta Lil by Cresta Rider, Flat Out is pointed toward the Grade 3 Fort Lauderdale at Gulfstream Park on 14 January, 2012.
The race is run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles and most importantly it is run on turf. Be it Fort Lauderdale or any other race on dirt, the Donn Handicap is run over a distance of 1 1/8 mile on dirt.
The Donn Handicap will be run next month, and in between races, Flat Out is also pre-entered in the Sunshine Millions Classic at about 1 1/8 miles on dirt.
The road to the Donn Handicap is pretty simple, it will be a wait and see game for Flat Out’s connections based on how he runs on each surface.
“We worked him at Churchill Downs to see if we were going to run him in the Foster or the Firecracker. He worked really good, but we ran in the Foster,” said Dickey.
