Question:

Flattening out the wrist at the top of the backswing?

On the back of my back swing I cup my wrist towards my forearm. Ive read that you have to straighten it out and keep it in line with the forearm. I know this is right, but when i do it...it feels like i cant generate any power, feels like my wrist arent working naturally, and there seems to be a strain between where my thumb begings and my wrist? Is it just a matter of muscle memory? im consistenly getting a slice or push...not terrible banana slices but itll go fairly straight then near the top itll veer to the left (im a southpaw)...this lack i feel for being able to gerenate power...is that normal as i straighten out my wrist?

  2. i would say that if you are succeeding doing what you  are doing now, then you should stick with it.  i have had tons of people tell me about ways that i need to change my swing, but in the end it is what is most comfortable that will get the job done.

  3. If you read David Ledbetter's book on Ben Hogan's swing throughout his playing career there is a very signifigant change that took place that Hogan made to his swing that felt so strongly about that he didn't reveal the "secret" for close to ten years.

This "secret" was the cupping of his left wrist at the top of the backswing.  This prevented him from hooking the ball.  Hogan stated that when he cupped his wrist it was impossible for him to hit a hook no matter how aggressively he swung.  It is the single most important change Hogan made to his swing.

Of course,...you are slicing....so this cupping of the wrist might not be appropraite for you.

  4. There are many ways to hit a golf ball and none are perfect for everybody.  Your desciption is not easy to picture but if you are getting power from your wrist c**k you have some fundamental issues that are not in your wrists. Consider taking a lesson.

Power comes from the lower body and trunk, "the big muscles." See the Ben Hogan book "5 Lessons" for a good explanation of a powerful swing.

  5. I totally get what you are saying. I recently read “Four Magic Moves” by Joe Dante. He promotes a straight to bowed (never cupped) left wrist (right handed). This is to promote a right to left draw, for more power. Problem is it feels very weak, at first. Part of the problem may be your swing plane is too flat, and around you shoulders. When I swing high and around my head (that’s what it feels like) the flat wrist seems to work better and I hit more draws. It’s defiantly a work in progress. Again try to get you swing plane higher. Don’t swing across your chest. Pros a very advances players may cup their wrist to avoid a hook, but their swing planes very high, promoting too much draw. The golf swing is a balancing act, and sometimes very frustrating, this wrist thing is another piece of an impossible puzzle you will never finish. Have fun!

    Good luck
