Flavia Pennetta: “I made a lot of mistakes in the tie-break” – Tennis News
Flavia Pennetta was just a step away from winning her maiden title this year in Acapulco, Mexico but was snubbed by the Israeli contestant, Sara Errani, in the title match. Errani was also crowned doubles champion as well; a rare
player to grab both the titles in a single year.
The Italian contestant who just turned 30-years-old on 25th February knew that she was not good at finishing off the set in her favour, especially her dismal performance in the second set tie-breaker proved to be the
turning point in the match. If she had managed to sneak away with a victory, she would have been much more pleased with her performance but she is still satisfied.
In an interview to the media representatives after the end of the tournament, she stated, “We both played well tonight, but Sara played really well in the important moments. I made a lot of mistakes in the tie-break and in the
third set I was tired physically and it went really fast. It has been a great week overall, but it would have been better to win the tournament.”
However, her efforts will be rewarded one day. She further added, “I'm happy I have a rest now before Indian Wells. I feel I'm playing much better now than when I got here, so I hope to play some good tennis there.” It shows that
she is looking ahead for the major tournament and has already forgotten about the fact that she was so close on becoming the champion in Mexico.
Nothing should be taken away from the Israeli contestant who deserved to win after such an emphatic comeback in the match. She survived the pressure situation in the second set tie-breaker and managed to overpower the Italian veteran
in three sets.
Pennetta is definitely eyeing to prolong her career by staying fit and performing consistently in each tournament. It was her seventh successive final in the tournament but she could only convert two opportunities and failed on
six other occasions. She won a title in Acapulco against Alize Cornet in 2008 and Ludmila Cervanova in 2005 to claim titles. Mexico has always been a great tour for the Italian except the day of her final match.
Her next focus is Indian Wells and she has got ample time to prepare herself for that. She is definitely eyeing an Olympic gold medal as well but prefers to progress step by step rather heaping over to big tournaments.
