Flavia Pennetta breezes past Alexa Glatch to reach round three – French Open 2012
World number 20, Flavia Pennetta, eased into the third round of the Roland Garros French Open on Wednesday by ousting the 22-year-old American competitor, Alexa Glatch, in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
It was a rematch of the French Open first round clash played three years ago between the two contestants. The Italian contender took the revenge of that loss and posted a resounding triumph against the American qualifier. However,
the head-to-head scores are lead by the Italian 2-1 after this triumph having defeated Glatch in the Federation Cup tie back in 2009.
The opening set witnessed four breakthroughs; two of them were played in consecutive games that kept the scores together at the start but the third and final breakpoint was bagged by the Italian tennis ace who clinched a lead of
one set.
Glatch was impressive at the start; forcing her opponent to work hard for her points but after losing the second breakthrough, she looked a bit heartbroken and played the rest of the set with no passion at all. Something was missing
from her game; probably it was the enthusiasm that was not there.
The second set battle started with an early breakthrough for the 18th seed Italian who clinched a couple of breakpoints. However, she lost one breakpoint in the third game but a serve hold in the fifth game posted an
unassailable lead of 4-1 in her favour.
American qualifier was in the middle of nowhere and was completely clueless about how to handle the situation. She had no game plan at all and looked like bit of worn out at the match; probably the hectic schedule had a toll on
her as she had already fought rigorously in the qualifying stage to reach the main round.
Flavia Pennetta will probably contest her next round match against the German number one, Angelique Kerber, who needs to avoid an upset in the second round against the Belarusian tennis ace, Olga Govortsova, to book a date with
the Italian. It should not be a problem for Kerber to routine through the Belarusian but upsets do happen just like case of Serena Williams.
