Flavia Pennetta breezes past Irina-Camelia Begu to reach the final – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Italian blooming star, Flavia Pennetta, tumbled over the fourth seed, Irina-Camelia Begu, in straight sets at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Friday. She clobbered a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Romanian to advance into the final showdown at this WTA (Women’s
Tennis Association) International event held in Acapulco, Mexico.
The world number 29 showed top notch performance at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess and trashed Begu in almost one and half hour. The contenders previously battled each other at the Wimbledon Championships last year and after earning this success, Pennetta
jumped to a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series against the Romanian.
The second seed passionately entered into the opening set and held her serve in the first game. After Begu kept her serve in the second game, the Italian fired angled shots from her box of tricks and stroke out the proceeding four games in a row. Apart from
losing her serve in the seventh game, Pennetta, broke the Romanian’s serve once more and pocketed the match by winning six games to two.
Pennetta kept momentum running into the follow-up set and held her opening serve again to take the initial lead. Despite suffering the first blow in the third game, the Italian unleashed barrage of groundstroke and went to five-game killing spree. She broke
Begu’s serve three times to register an assuring 6-2 score line.
Summing up the higher ranked performance, Pennetta clobbered a lower first serve share but committed fewer unforced errors and no double faults. She also marked 22 out of 38 points on her first serve share and cashed in six out of nine break opportunities.
Next in line for Pennetta is her third seeded compatriot, Sara Errani, who upset Roberta Vinci with a breadstick to set-up this meeting. Errani lost her serve once but capitalised on four out of eight break chances to seal the match with a 6-4, 6-1 success
in one hour and 16 minutes.
Pennetta leads the head-to-head series by 3-1 against Errani and both challengers will face each other after two years. They previously met each other at the Marbella WTA International event in Spain where Pennetta crippled her fellow citizen with double
breadsticks.
