Flavio Briatore: Formula 1 should be less technical than it is – Formula 1 news
According to the former Renault team principal Flavio Briatore, Formula 1 should be less technical and the drivers should have more hold on the outcome of each event rather than the engineers.
“We need to lower the costs but also the technology because right now the drivers are clicking a thousand buttons to the right and to the left. The engineers have taken control with regulations that are difficult to interpret. We saw what happened (at Silverstone),
with rules on a Friday and different ones on a Monday. The spectators aren't interested in that, they just want to see the drivers fight,” he told the media.
He added that the sport has become way more technical since the past 5-6 years and that this is not what Formula 1 is.
One has to admit that the officials of the sport have introduced un-required gadgets to the sport and now the drivers and teams rely on their cars more rather than the drivers.
Drivers nowadays have to perform just like robots and not commit any sort of mistake. That way, they secure the best possible results and ‘pushing’ or ‘squeezing’ performance out of a car is not in the drivers’ hands to the extent it used to be a couple
of years ago.
“We need to return to a more normal Formula 1, as in the days of Senna, Prost and Mansell, and Alonso at the beginning,” he added.
The Kinetic Energy Recovery System was reintroduced to the sport in 2011 and it also makes the sport more ‘technical’ and ‘machine reliant.’
No doubt Formula 1 is a balance of technology and driving skills but the 2011 Formula 1 season has pretty much been about the technical aspects of the sport including the Drag Reduction System zones.
Each race is difficult to understand for the fans because of the DRS zones and now it seems that the organisers are just trying to give more thrills to the audience.
The ‘worth’ of unforeseen circumstances is dropping now and the sport at times is getting quite boring because of these technical aspects.
