Flavio Briatore believes Fernando Alonso is better than Michael Schumacher – Formula 1 news
Former Benetton boss, Flavio Briatore has said that Fernando Alonso of Ferrari is a better racing driver than the seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher who is driving with Mercedes at present.
Briatore asserted that Alonso is the best driver in Formula 1 in the past two decades. Moreover, he said that the Spaniard is above the record championship holder as he makes lesser mistakes and performs exceptionally well in pressure conditions.
“He [Alonso] is the best of the last 20 years,” said the former Benetton and Renault boss. “He (Alonso) is above Schumacher, but we are talking about very high levels and minimal differences. But Fernando makes very few mistakes, even under pressure, and
his impression of the race is spectacular.”
In addition, he said that the two-time world champion has performed well even at a time when his team has not implemented the perfect strategy in the race. He added that the 31-year-old has proven his greatness by securing competitive results even with an
incompetent car and said that racing is his passion.
“Sometimes a team can make mistakes with strategy but he can pull it back. And when he’s ahead, 90 per cent of the time he will win race, even if car is not competitive. He lives and breathes racing only,” added Briatore, who was banned from F1 amid the
‘crashgate’ scandal of 2008/9.
Alonso is presently leading the drivers’ championship with 179 points and is ahead of his main rivals, Lewis Hamilton of McLaren, Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and Red Bull Racing drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber with a strong lead.
Besides, he has been deemed as the strongest contender in this year’s championship fight and he surely deserves that as he has performed tremendously well for the Scarlet team which expected to face difficulties in the opening few grands prix.
He has shown his remarkable skills and has proven his potential even when the Italian team has failed to provide its star driver a competent car as compared to the other contenders in the field.
