Flavio Briatore claims Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso one of the few greats in Formula 1 sport
Former Renault team principal Flavio Briatore has recently stated that Fernando Alonso is one of the ‘few’ great drivers in Formula 1 and he has the capability of defeating Michael Schumacher’s records in the sport.
“I think Fernando Alonso can win the championship at Ferrari without Flavio Briatore. Fernando deserves to be the best driver in history. He has decided to be with Ferrari until the end of his career and I hope he can get the cars to win more titles than
Schumacher,” he told the media.
Alonso became a part of Ferrari in 2010 and since then, he has been trying his best to challenge for race victories and even the drivers’ title. In 2010, the Spaniard led the drivers’ standings until the very last race of the season but unfortunately lost
to Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing.
In 2011, he has won just one race up until now but still he is one of the top contenders for the championship besides Sebastian Vettel who is leading the championship with a big margin.
Briatore has been one of the people who recognised Alonso’s talent in the beginning. The former world champion won both of his championships under Briatore’s management at Renault after which he joined McLaren.
The former Renault team principal claims that since he has been close to Alonso, he is aware of his capabilities very well and that the Spaniard is in the same league as Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and even Michael Schumacher.
“They are two totally different drivers. Fernando is a little better, because when Michael becomes depressed, he falls back, while in the same situation Fernando's concentration sharpens,” he said.
As a result, Briatore is linked with Ferrari as well for a future shift expectedly until the 2013 Formula 1 season. He was banned from the sport as a result of a spygate scandal but still it is believed that he is going to rejoin the sport sometime soon.
Even now, he is closely involved in the sport as he attends almost all of the race events.
