Flavio Briatore thinks RBR driver Sebastian Vettel should stick with the team until 2014 – Formula 1
According to the former Renault team boss Flavio Briatore, Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel should stick with the team at least until 2014.
There are rumours linking Vettel to a shift to Ferrari in the near future.
Briatore claims that Ferrari is a great team but if two champions like Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel team up alongside each other, it would definitely affect the team’s performance. Since the reigning world champion is performing really well with
RBR, the former Renault boss thinks that he should remain with his team.
“Ferrari is of course a fascinating team, but he should go where he can win. At Ferrari he would also have greater responsibility as a driver and the pressure is much bigger. Fernando can cope only because he is already mature,” Briatore told Auto Bild.
Other than that, Briatore claims that Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber deserves to be respected as well as he has also achieved a lot in his career.
“In every sport there is a number one. In Formula One that is currently Sebastian. But Mark is fighting for a runner-up World Championship place. This is an achievement that should not be underestimated as Michael Schumacher's team-mates often did not succeed,”
he added.
Vettel has been performing at his best since he joined RBR back in 2009 as he challenged for the drivers’ title throughout the 2009 Formula 1 season before winning it finally in 2010.
In 2011 so far, he is leading the championship dominantly and it seems that the championship is pretty much in his hands as he is more than 100 points ahead of his rivals.
With just 6 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season, Vettel can wrap up the championship mathematically if he wins the Singapore Grand Prix. His rivals need to win races and perform consistently now if they even want a sniff of the world title as their championship
run is now reliant on Vettel’s performance more than their own.
