Flavio Cipolla, Stephane Robert advance to the second round – BNP Paribas Polish Open 2011
Flavio Cipolla defeats Michal Przysiezny 7-6(4), 7-5
World number 102, second seed Flavio Cipolla of Italy prevailed over Polish Michal Przysiezny, ranked 180th in the world, in straight sets 7-6(4), 7-5 in the first round at the BNP Paribas Polish Open in Sopot, Poland
on Tuesday. It took the Italian an hour and 57 minutes to beat his opponent in an evenly contested match.
Przysiezny and Cipolla could not break each other in the first set and levelled the score at 6-6, forcing a tie-break. The Italian captured two mini-breaks in the tie-break, sealing it 7-4. Cipolla fired 64 percent of the first
serves and two aces in the opening set. The 27-year-old won the only break point he received on his opponent’s serve in the first set.
Cipolla and Przysiezny broke each other twice in the first ten games of the second set, taking the score to 5-5. The Italian broke his unseeded opponent in the eleventh game and served out the set at 6-5. The five feet and eight
inches tall failed to save both break points he faced but compensated by clinching all the three break points he received on Przysiezny’s serve in the second set.
The Italian will meet world number 166 Jan Hajek of Czech Republic in the second round.
Stephane Robert beats Robert Godlewski 6-2, 6-0
Third seed Stephane Robert of France joined Cipolla in the second round as he thrashed world number 755 Robert Godlewski of Poland in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 in just 50 minutes.
The French dropped just a couple of games in the first set, breaking
Godlewski twice to win the set 6-2. The six feet and one inch tall sealed 73 percent of the first service points and 75 percent of the second service points in the opening set. The right-handed smacked his opponent’s serve throughout the set as he
won an incredible 48 percent of the first return points.
Robert was almost flawless in the second set as he did not allow the Polish to win even a single game in the second set, breaking Godlewski thrice and claiming the set 6-0. He delivered 47 percent of the first serves and one ace
in the second set. The French clinched an amazing 67 percent of the points on first returns. The 31-year-old capitalised on three of the four break point opportunities he created on Godlewski’s serve in the second set.
The French is drawn to play Spaniard Ivan Navarro, ranked 190th in the world, in the round of 16.
